To kick off our summer, Memorial Day Weekend, AND me turning 29 (YAY!), our friends from Chicago and us decided to do a little road trip. The options were between driving to Nashville, Memphis, or St. Louis, and as you guessed from the title of this post…. we ended up choosing St. Louis, MO.
Day 1 – Saturday
Me being the “let’s get there the earliest so we can have the entire day to explore” type of person, thought it would be best to leave at 6:00am and beat all the traffic. Little did I forget that there is NO traffic in the Midwest. The drive took us exactly 3 hours and 33 minutes from KC.
Luckily our room at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark was ready and we were able to check in, settle, and rest a bit. The hotel is located literally in front of the Busch Stadium, which was a big selling point in choosing where to stay (especially because we were planning on checking out the baseball game on Monday).
While we waited for our friends to arrive, Pablo and I decided to head across the street to the stadium for some food and drinks. As soon as we walked in, I spotted the table next to us and knew exactly what we would be ordering: NACHOS!!
Day 2 – Sunday
For breakfast, we went to Egg. There was a little bit of a wait for a table of 4, but without a doubt it was WORTH.THE.WAIT. Not only did the food looked, smelled, and tasted amazing, but the service was an all around 5 stars!!
While we waited for our food to arrive, the server brought us a huuuge (and delicious) serving of corn bread with gravy. When we told him that we didn’t order it, he said it was from the owner/manager as a sorry for sitting us in a dark corner. I mean, seriously? This place was great and I will definitely go back on my next trip here.
After our savory breakfast, we were on a quest for some sweets. After a quick search on Yelp, I found Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery and what a great find! Apparently, Clementine’s is the only creamery in St.Louis (and if i’m not wrong, also in the state of Missouri?) that sells ice cream with booze! Yes, BOOZE as in alcohol — hence the “naughty” name. [And yes, we had to get carded to sample the flavors.]
I ended up choosing 2 “naughty” flavors (it was my birthday weekend after all): 4 Hands Milk Chocolate Stout (my all time favorite!) and Maple Bourbon.
To walk off all the food, we picked up the dogs and headed to Forest Park, which is also connected to the St. Louis Zoo (the entrance is FREE!!). However, we didn’t get to go in because no dogs are allowed. So instead, we walked a good 3 miles down to The World’s Fair Pavilion where the famous stairs are.
After sweating it out for a couple hours, we were ready to cool down with a few beers. We headed to three different breweries:
Day 3 – Monday
Being the last day of our trip and one day from my birthday, everyone sneaked out in the morning while I was getting ready to get me some birthday cupcakes.
After singing happy birthday and devouring the cupcakes, we were ready to head to the game. However, we had two pit-stops:
1 – The famous St. Louis Arch. We couldn’t leave the city without seeing it, and I mean that literally. Pablo would not have allowed it. Unfortunately, it was closed due to construction and we didn’t get to go up.
2 – Sauce On the Side. To save our appetite and money, we all decided to order one calzone per couple. BAD IDEA. Pablo and I fought fork vs. fork for that last bite. IT WAS SO GOOD! We all ordered the “Meat Me in St. Louie.” It had Italian sausage, pepperoni, and cheese. You can’t go wrong with that, right?
TIP: order a side of the cheese sauce, you are welcome.
After stuffing our faces, we walked back to the stadium just in time for the beginning of the game. The Busch Stadium is easily one of my favorite baseball stadiums. It is huge, modern, and had tons of food and beer options. Plus, the view from our seats was great (especially for the price). Bonus: You could see directly to the St. Louis Arch!
After the game, we headed to Urban Chestnut Brewery for some last minute fueling before we all parted ways. Overall, it was a great birthday weekend. And I’m very happy we got to take this little break from everything that is going on in our lives to make new memories and check off another city from our bucket list.
